The public prosecutor of the Grand Criminal Court has ordered the detention of the driver responsible for the death of Officer Mohammed Abu Askar, a member of the Criminal Investigation Department, and his companion, following a deliberate hit-and-run incident during an official duty in Irbid. The driver will be held for 15 days, subject to renewal.

The prosecutor charged the driver with premeditated murder, involving multiple victims, including a public servant performing his duties. This charge is based on Article 327/1/2 of the Penal Code, and if convicted, the driver could face a life sentence of 20 years of hard labor.

Additionally, the prosecutor also charged the driver's accomplice with incitement to murder and resisting public security forces.

Details of the Incident

The Public Security Directorate (PSD) released details of the deliberate hit-and-run, stating that investigative teams from the Criminal Investigation Department, Preventive Security, Irbid Police, and Forensic Laboratories quickly identified the driver and his companions. They were arrested within hours of the incident at an apartment in Amman.

The PSD spokesperson said that the incident occurred when Officer Abu Askar stopped the vehicle during his official duties. The driver intentionally ran over the officer multiple times before fleeing the scene, leading to the officer's death.

The investigation teams tracked the vehicle, which was abandoned by the suspects. The vehicle was secured and examined by forensic experts.

Following a swift investigation, the identities of the driver and his accomplices were determined. They were located in an apartment in the Al-Nasr area of East Amman, where security forces arrested the driver and four others. During interrogation, the driver confessed to deliberately running over Officer Abu Askar multiple times before fleeing.

The case has been referred to the public prosecutor of the Grand Criminal Court, who has ordered the detention of the driver and one accomplice in a correctional facility, pending charges of murder against a public servant, incitement to murder, and resisting security forces.
